Unifyl — a dual-pane file manager for macOS

How to open HWP / HWPX files on a Mac — without Hancom Office

Updated 2026 · when you only need to read the document

HWP and HWPX are the document formats of Hancom Office — the de-facto standard for Korean government paperwork, grant applications, and official forms. If a Korean partner just sent you one, macOS has no idea what to do with it, and installing a paid office suite to read a single attachment is overkill.

Your options

Reading an HWPX in Unifyl

  1. Download Unifyl (free — HWPX preview is a free-tier feature).
  2. Navigate to the file and open the preview: the document body renders inline.
  3. Arrow through a whole folder of forms, previewing each — this is a file manager, so triage is the point.

HWPX is an XML-based format; Unifyl parses the document structure directly, on-device.

Honest limits: this is a reader. Complex tables and layout may render simplified, and the older binary .hwp format is not previewed — HWPX only. For editing, or for binary HWP, Hancom's own tools are the answer.

Bonus for Korean-file workflows: Unifyl also opens Korea's ALZ archives and repairs garbled Korean filenames — the three problems tend to arrive in the same email.
