How to open ALZ files on a Mac
ALZ is a Korean archive format created by the ALZip utility — still everywhere in Korean
business, government, and older download archives. macOS's built-in Archive Utility doesn't know
it: double-click a .alz and you get "unable to expand".
Your options
- Bandizip for Mac — free extractor that handles ALZ. Fine if extraction is all you need.
- The Unarchiver — the veteran free tool; ALZ support is hit-or-miss depending on the file.
- Unifyl (this site) — opens the ALZ like a folder inside a file manager, so you can browse it and copy out just the file you need. Free; details below.
Better than extracting: browse it like a folder
Most ALZ files arrive with one or two files you actually want. In Unifyl, press
Return on the archive and you're inside it — a normal folder listing. Put the
cursor on the file you need, press F5, and it lands in the opposite pane. No full
extraction, no temp-folder cleanup. The same gesture works for ZIP, 7z, TAR and RAR.
- Download Unifyl (free) and launch it.
- Navigate to the
.alzfile and pressReturn. - Select what you need and press
F5to copy it out.
Note: ALZ support ships in the direct download from unifyl.app. The Mac App Store edition can't bundle the ALZ engine due to sandbox rules — if ALZ is why you're here, grab the direct build. It's free either way.
If the filenames come out garbled
Files from Korean archives often extract with names like »ç¾÷°èȹ¼.hwp. That's
an encoding problem, not corruption — see
